Inspired by her Taiwanese grandfather, a journalist in Japan has illuminated a little-known university that started out as a grand piece of imperial propaganda celebrating Japan’s subjugation of Asia. In the decades since, it has become a place where former students and their families can share a sense of unity forged at the school. The Japan-run Kenkoku University, which only lasted for eight years, selected elite male students from Japan, China, Korea, then Soviet Union and Mongolia. The students lived and studied together under the banner of “the harmony of five ethnicities” in northern China's Manchuria, during Japan's occupation in the early 20th century.

Sonny Perdue is declaring that he wants Georgia's public university system to be the best in the nation. The former two-term Republican governor and U.S. agriculture secretary was officially installed as chancellor Friday of the 340,000-student system. Perdue actually took over as chancellor in April after Gov. Brian Kemp overhauled the Board of Regents to clear the way for Perdue's appointment. The new chancellor says he wants to continue with policies that keep tuition low and push for students to graduate on time. He says a new focus on data will help improve the 26 universities and colleges and win public trust.

Hundreds of graduates of a shuttered private Christian university in West Virginia say have been unable to access transcripts, impeding their ability to apply for jobs and schooling. Ohio Valley University announced it was closing in December 2021 and filed for bankruptcy. After the university closed, officials said they retained a group of employees to manage academic records. Last week, they wrote on a school Facebook page that the school had no means of processing transcript requests because the system was hacked and all files were deleted. The announcement sparked panic among former students, some of whom are still paying off loans and now can't prove they have a degree.
