KIRKWOOD, Mo. – Brittany Adams finished 3-for-3 with a double, and the Mineral Area softball team eliminated East Central from the Region 16 tournament on Sunday afternoon.
Winning pitcher Alyssa Rennick went 2-for-3 with two walks while scoring four times, and had a two-run double for insurance in an 11-9 victory.
Desiree Thomas and RikkiLyn Wright each added a double and single, and the Lady Cardinals surged in front 8-1 midway through the third inning.
Molly Feldewerth homered and Meg Barger paced East Central by going 3-for-4, while four other players notched two hits apiece against Rennick, who struck out two for the win.
Singles by Adams and Madyson McDermott created a MAC rally in the seventh before Rennick drove them in. Alyssa Sago sacrificed, and Abby Sampson added an RBI ground out for an 11-5 lead.
East Central rallied for four tallies in the home half before falling short. Five consecutive batters reached safely after the Mineral Area defense turned its second double play of the game.
Sampson singled and walked in five plate appearances. The Lady Cardinals (12-35) advanced to face top seed St. Louis on Monday at 2 p.m., and must beat the Archers twice.
East Central 5, Mineral Area 4
KIRKWOOD, Mo. – Molly Feldewerth walked and scored on a two-out error in the bottom of the seventh inning, and East Central edged Mineral Area 5-4 in an a first-round game on Sunday morning.
Kori Fiedler extended the game with an infield hit to finish 3-for-4 overall, and Seeley Friend put the ball in play for the decisive unearned run.
Abbi Sampson finished 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, and put Mineral Area ahead 1-0 after Skye Batchelor singled to lead off the top of the third.
Singles by Kati McCormack and RikkiLyn Wright preceded a two-run double by pinch-hitter Brittany Adams in the fourth to create a 3-0 cushion.
East Central countered in the home half with a momentous three-run homer by Alyssa Moore against Wright, who struck out three in defeat as both teams totaled nine hits.
Sampson went deep for the fifth time this season to restore a 4-3 MAC advantage, but three consecutive one-out singles brought the Falcons even again in the fifth.
Lauren Grunwaldt got the win for East Central. Feldewerth collected two singles.
