PARK HILLS – Sophomore Alyssa Sago ripped an RBI single to right-center field with two outs in the seventh inning, and the Mineral Area softball team won the first game of a doubleheader in walk-off fashion on Saturday.
Sago had already singled in a run during her previous plate appearance, and repeated the effort as the Lady Cardinals prevailed 7-6 over Lincoln Land.
Pinch-runner Skye Batchelor scored from second base after Desiree Thomas doubled down the right-field line to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Sago stepped to the dish following a strikeout and ground out.
Lexi Adams, Kati McCormack, Thomas and Sago had multi-hit games for the Lady Cardinals.
Sago pitched all seven innings and allowed six runs on 13 hits while gaining her second win of the season.
The Lady Cardinals batted around in the fifth inning and scored six runs to build a 6-3 advantage.
McCormack and RikkiLyn Wright started that rally with consecutive singles. Adams doubled to left-center as both runners raced home, then scored as Thomas switched places with her on a tying, two-out double at 3-3.
Three straight singles produced three more runs as Mineral Area surged ahead.
Lincoln Land battled back in the top of the sixth with singles from Hailey Patrick and Nicole Robinson.
Following a fielder's choice, Madie Sims launched a three-run homer to right-center that made it 6-6.
Jacey Nall worked three shutout innings from the circle for the Loggers and struck out four, but was pulled in favor of Alyssa DeSpain, who allowed the six-run outburst in the fifth.
Megan Behl entered the game later in the frame, and picked up the eventual loss in the seventh.
The Loggers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Lincoln Land came out strong again in game two by scoring three first-inning runs, and rolled to a 9-0 victory.
Sims doubled to the left-field corner and drove in both Abigail Walters and Courtney Keller. Katelyn Turbyfill grounded out to the second baseman for a 3-0 advantage.
Megan Behl headed back to the circle for the start, and allowed just two hits in three innings. Kari Sarhage struck out two over the final two frames.
Alyssa Rennick lasted 3 2/3 innings for the Lady Cardinals (8-16), and surrendered eight runs on 14 hits.
McCormack, Paige Battreal and Worth picked up the only Mineral Area hits of the second game.
Lincoln Land (10-16) added a run in the third before putting up four in the fourth as the first six batters reached base.
Lincoln Land lined out twice with the bases loaded later in the fourth, had had already established an 8-0 margin.
Sims was 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Keller, Turbyfill, Brooke Webber and Kayle Maurer each had two hits for the Loggers.
