PARK HILLS – St. Louis launched 10 home runs over the course of a softball doubleheader sweep against Mineral Area on Tuesday to secure the top seed in the upcoming Region 16 playoffs.
Haley Schmutz and Molly Darner each homered twice and picked up three RBI during game one, and the Archers used a 10-run third inning to prevail 15-6.
Jennifer Luebbert was 3-for-5 with a triple, and Miranda Hudson added three hits for St. Louis. Sarah Shepard allowed two earned runs on four hits over four innings for the win.
Abby Sampson drove in three and homered during a five-run second inning as Mineral Area erased an initial 5-0 deficit. But the Archers erupted for double digits in the next frame.
Alyssa Rennick finished 1-for-2 with a walk for the Lady Cardinals. Marissa Worth, Alyssa Sago, Kelly McMahon and Paige Battreal singled.
RikkiLyn Wright allowed 12 runs, nine earned, in the loss. Rennick surrendered three runs, one earned, and six hits over the last three innings.
St. Louis capped the twin bill with a wild 25-13 triumph in game two, notching 10 runs in the second and fourth innings while going deep six times.
Kacy Bergfeld crushed two home runs while going 3-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored, while Tori Siebum, Sidney Litviak, Abby Lavely and Schuutz also left the yard.
Siebum and Litviak totaled four RBI apiece, and Lavely matched Litviak with four runs scored. Sophia Koesterer pitched two innings and struck out four in the relief win for the Archers (28-4, 6-0)
Sampson connected for a three-run homer – her second of the day and fourth of the season – and tallied four RBI for the Lady Cardinals (9-29, 2-6).
Desiree Thomas homered while driving in a team-high five runs. Mineral Area grabbed a 3-1 lead after one inning, but trailing by 19 before scoring seven times in the fifth.
Rennick allowed nine runs on seven hits over 1 2/3 innings, but was 2-for-2 at the plate. Sago added two hits and Brandi Huber singled for MAC.
Sampson increased her team-high RBI total for the season to 28.
