Tennis and golf play, while baseball is hailed out

BONNE TERRE — The new concrete bleachers on North County’s baseball field were empty on Wednesday afternoon due to the hail and thunderstorm which passed over canceling the game again with De Soto, while just a few feet away North County’s cracked and faded tennis courts were dried out after a small delay and the Raiders’ tennis team were able to get in their tennis meet with the Crystal City Hornets.

Despite a harsh cold wind and a drizzle coming down during the last games, the Raiders were able to complete a 6-3 win over the Hornets.

Frederick Beckmann and Andrew Blunt started things off with an 8-3 win in No. 1 doubles. Robert Rinnell and Aleksi Kuokkanen lost 8-2 in No. 2 doubles, and Zach Perry and Andy Bibnall were edged out by a score of 8-6 in No. 3 doubles.

Beckmann won 8-1 in No. 1 singles, and Blunt dropped an 8-4 No. 2 match to the Hornets. Rinnell and Kuokkanen both avenged their doubles loss with scores of 8-6 and 8-4 respectively in their  No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches.

Stephen Edgar doubled up his opponent 8-4 in No. 5 singles, and Mark Elders claimed the No. 6 singles match by a score of 8-3.

“I was just glad we were able to get it in,” said North County coach Mary Hoehn in regards to the weather after her team’s first win in as many meets.

North County will travel to Festus on Friday for their next meet, weather permitting.

GOLF

Valle 195, North County 198

TERRE DU LAC — The North County Raiders were able to get their golf meet in with the Valle Warriors on Wednesday, taking only a short break until the afternoon’s hail storm passed by leaving thousands of white, icy, facsimiles all over the Terre Du Lac golf course. The Raiders won the meet 195-198.

The Raiders only had four players on the team and therefore had to utilize every one of their scores for a team score. In most matches, a team has six players to choose scores from, usually using the best four to comprise the team score.

Chris Spitzmiller was medalist, shooting a 46 for North County. Josh Inman shot a 148, Cameron Claywell scored a 50, and John Woods finished with a 51.

The Warriors had only two different scores for their four best. Kellen Basler and Nick Trautman each shot 48, and Colby Donze and Casey Klump both had 51’s

North County will next play Farmington on Tuesday at the St. Francois Country Club. Valle’s next golf meet will be this afternoon at the Crown Pointe Links against Central.
