PARK HILLS — Even while being draped by defenders on several occasions, U’Knique Gaines was determined to attack the basket and finish.
The sophomore transfer forward from Tulsa, Okla. muscled in 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting Saturday, and the Mineral Area College women’s basketball team routed John A. Logan 66-40 to remain unbeaten.
Larra Kubinski netted 10 points and Ashleigh Bow had nine while freshman point guard Riley Reddin compiled eight assists and six steals for MAC (4-0).
John A. Logan (1-3) was pestered by the Lady Cardinals into 33 turnovers, and shot just 30 percent from the field.
The first half featured nine lead changes before Mineral Area capped it with an extended 27-7 run. Points off turnovers and solid half-court passing fueled the dominant stretch that put the home team firmly in control.
BreAnn Denny paced the Lady Vols with 12 points, earning most of that production early. Her slashing layup and ensuing basket off a stolen pass handed Logan a 15-12 lead nine minutes into the game.
Mineral Area adjusted defensively to neutralize the opposing guards, and responded with a pivotal 15-0 spurt sparked by superior hustle.
After Kasia Kiejdrowska drained a go-ahead 3-pointer, Ashley Bow swiped a loose ball and found M.J. Buschmann breaking for an easy layup.
Ashley Ward knocked down a corner jumper after saving an errant pass near the baseline, and the margin reached 29-17 following a Reddin steal as Alayah Cooper-Johnson dished to Kubinski in transition.
Gaines accounted for three straight field goals just before intermission. Her physical move to split two players and bank an off-balanced shot lifted MAC to a 39-22 advantage at the break.
Mineral Area utilized a 20-10 edge in bench scoring, and its reserves logged substantial second-half minutes while stretching the lead.
The Lady Cardinals assisted on 23 of their 27 made field goals, and enjoyed a 58-33 spread when Lacey Murray sank a triple from the left side.
Aneta Sloma and Alison Webb each scored seven points for John A. Logan.
MAC will travel to Council Bluffs, Iowa this weekend to face Iowa Western and Cloud County (Kan.)
