POTOSI – The Potosi girls basketball team capitalized on multiple Jefferson turnovers to generate a 21-6 run through the second quarter on Thursday.
Mackenzie Adams drained two shots from the perimeter during the period, and finished with 18 points for the Lady Trojans. She increased the offensive pace for Potosi (6-6) by pushing the ball in transition and creating open looks for her teammates.
Cameryn Yount recorded eight of her game-high 19 points during the stretch leading into halftime, and added four long-distance shots in a 60-52 triumph for the Lady Trojans.
Olivia Coleman consistently created space in the post to control the boards, and had 11 points plus seven rebounds in the win.
Jefferson (6-8) battled early with tough defense, and a perimeter-based attack. Heidi Hearst drained two of her four 3-pointers during the first quarter, and ended with a team-high 14 points in the loss.
Potosi held a 15-13 edge at the end of the first after often working the ball inside for easy looks and chances from the free-throw line.
The Lady Trojans quickly built their lead in the second quarter by constantly pressuring the ball handler to urge bad passes, and led 36-19 at the break.
Jefferson frequently attacked the rim early in the third period, but struggled to finish in close. Meghan Boulicault tallied a game-high 12 rebounds plus six points while providing a powerful presence near the basket.
Yount widened the margin to 44-25 on back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the third period. The Lady Blue Jays remained dependent on jump shots, but yielded unfavorable results.
Hearst received an inbounds pass at the top of the key with 1.6 seconds remaining in the third, and sank her final 3-pointer as time expired to bring Jefferson within 50-38.
Potosi continued to force turnovers with aggressive defense in the fourth, but the Lady Blue Jays began converting their jumpers more frequently to slightly trim the deficit.
Laney Smith, who notched all 10 of her points during the final period, decreased the difference to single figures two separate times on hard takes to the basket midway through the quarter.
Yount drilled her fourth 3-pointer to regain a 55-44 edge with three minutes to play. Smith hit two shots from behind the arc to chip away before the final buzzer, but Adams converted three of her four chances from the foul line in the final 30 seconds to seal the win.
Each team finished with nine made free throws, but Potosi earned 24 chances from the stripe while Jefferson had 14.
Hanna Floyd contributed eight of her 11 points during the third quarter for the Lady Blue Jays.
The Lady Trojans will travel to play Cape Central (4-5) on Monday.
