STE. GENEVIEVE – Jared Jones pitched his way through four innings without allowing a hit for Jackson-Thomure Bonne Terre Post 83 on Wednesday evening.
Festus Post 253 responded with three in a row, however, to help snap a scoreless deadlock in the fifth, and gained serious leverage in the hunt for a Senior Legion District 13 title.
No. 9 batter Gunnison Heine provided the pivotal two-run triple to deep center field, and Festus rode a complete game by hurler Jake Leitner to a 3-1 victory at Yanks’ Field.
Leitner scattered five hits and struck out six without issuing a walk. His outing began with three straight ground outs that third baseman Charlie Pratt handled.
Matt Rosen and Pratt singled ahead of Heine, and Post 253 solidified a spot in the championship round as the top seed on Friday, along with an important day to rest.
Gavin Turley extended the 2-0 lead with a squeeze bunt later in the fifth. That insurance run became magnified when Bonne Terre (6-6) threatened in the sixth.
Briley Smith singled with one out before being erased on a fielder’s choice, and Jones drove in Kolten Poorman with a RBI double down the left-field line.
Leitner limited the damage after Sean Pruneau flied out to deep right, and closed out the contest with back-to-back strikeouts.
Jones fanned four batters overall, and retired 10 straight after an excellent stop by Poorman up the middle stranded Festus runners at second and third in the opening frame.
Bonne Terre squandered singles by Pruneau and Eli Claywell in the second inning, along with a leadoff double by Poorman in the fourth.
Post 83 dropped into the elimination bracket, and will play Thursday at 8 p.m. against the winner of the previous game between Ste. Genevieve and De Soto.
