KIRKWOOD, Mo. – Gracie Wright, a West County student representing Mineral Area Elks Lodge 2583, will carry the Missouri banner for the Elks National Hoop Shoot competition.
Two rounds of overtime were required last Saturday at Kirkwood North Middle School before Wright managed to unseat defending state champion Bailey Fleming in the Girls 12-13 age division.
Seven district winners gathered for the state event, and Wright emerged as the new champion after connecting on 31-of-35 free throws overall.
Fleming equaled Wright by making 22-of-25 shots in regulation, and both players were perfect on five attempts during the pressure-packed first overtime phase.
Four successful tosses from there were enough for Wright to qualify for the regional contest in Paris, Tenn., on Mar. 10.
She will battle the champions of Kentucky, Arkansas and Tennessee for a berth in the national finals, which are scheduled for Apr. 21 in Chicago.
