List grows and so do donations for Caring Communities

Donations may continue to be made through Wednesday to Caring Communities which buys gifts for children in need in St. Francois County.

Wish lists for the children first referred to the program have been filled, but organizers say more referrals have come in from schools. Currently, 1,557 children are being served. That’s 200 more than were on the list last week and donations are still desperately needed.

After a story in the Daily Journal Dec. 10 about Caring Communities’ need, Coordinator Tammy Durbin said donations began to pick up.

&#8220We have collected almost $7,000 since your article last week,” said Durbin. &#8220Awesome! People are reading and you have made a tremendous difference!”

She said people have brought baby beds, toddler beds, walkers, bikes, coats, clothing and toys.

Donations made out to St. Francois County Community Partnership may be taken to their office at The Factory or mailed to them at 200 West First Street, Suite 182, Farmington, Mo., 63640. For more information, call 431-3173.

Each family served is given a survey and among their comments are these: “I think that it is nice how you handle things where not everyone at the child’s school or the parents of other students know that their family needs help at the holiday and that you are very nice people. Thank you for all the help.”

“I would personally like to thank all of you. This makes it possible for Santa to leave some presents for my kids.”

In one survey, a family asked for information on where to find a used electric stove. Theirs caught fire two months ago and now they have no means of cooking. Someone has offered to give them $75 to help pay for a stove if they can find one.
