Learning Zone celebration features marathon kids, cheerleaders
Fredericktown Intermediate School’s Learning Zone marathon kids and cheerleading classes enjoyed a celebration May 21, on the high school track.
This concludes the fourth year for the intermediate school’s after school program.
Sally Hovis, program coordinator, says, “We plan to continue it next year. It is a great program and receives funding from state and federal grant monies.”
Hovis explained the marathoners completed their 26th mile Thursday.
As a part of the requirements they have to complete 26 good deeds, run 26 miles, and read 26 books.
“They don’t have to run all 26 miles at once,” Hovsi said. “They have been working on it all year,” Hovis said.
Students from the intermediate school gathered on the bleachers to cheer on their peers led by the learning zone cheerleaders who also performed at the celebration.
Hovis recognized the efforts of Colleen Pierson and Teri Jenkins who she said are instrumental in the program’s leadership. Hovis was surpirsed to receive a large card and gift certificate presented by Principal Mary Moyers. The card was signed by all of the learning zone students and came with lots of praise and applause from teachers and students.

One of the “Marathon Kids” finishes his 26th mile for the Learning Zone After School program at the intermediate school. A school-wide celebration was held in their honor Thursday at the FHS track.

The FIS Learning Zone Cheerleading class performs and leads a crowd of students in cheering on the Marathon Kids class as they finish their 26th mile Thursday, on the FHS track.
