Clay Relief Sculpture Class

Create your very own sculptural masterpiece as you are guided through the process of additive relief sculpture. Join local artist and returning instructor Angela Knight at the Ozark Regional Library in Fredericktown on Nov. 27 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for a class on Clay Relief Sculpture.

Each participant will be provided with a 6” x 6” “slab” of white earthenware clay on which to build hid or her “image.” The outline of the image you brought with you will be traced onto the slab. Then, you will build the image up from the slab by adding clay to create a three dimensional illusion, as if the animal was “popping” off the clay surface. To complete the illusion, you will “texturize” and add details to the animal in “high relief,” and “draw” into the background in “low relief.” You can add a frame if desired. The class will finish with a sharing “critique” to cap the experience with positive support from participants.

These works will be allowed to dry slowly and will be bisque fired by the instructor and returned to the Library for pick-up. Feel free to bring snacks to share. Wear art studio clothing and avoid wearing jewelry that might not be clay-friendly. All materials and tools will be provided.

Please bring a clear image of an animal in profile that will fit easily into a 6” x 6” square. You can bring several from which to choose. Animals with textures will work nicely- llamas, chickens, foxes, fish, horses, dogs, cats- things with fur, feathers or scales.

This class is open to interested persons over the age of 12, no experience necessary. The materials fee for this class is $10. Space is limited to the first 12 registrants, so please contact 573-783-3303, klineju@missouri.edu for more information or submit payment to MU Extension Center at 137 W.
