100 Years – May 14, 1925
Beginning next Monday, Fredericktown is to have direct connection with St. Louis via an automobile bus line. Alvin Zwick, president of the concern that has been operating a bus line between Farmington and St. Louis announces this week his intention of running one bus each way to directly connect Fredericktown to St. Louis.
Sheriff Matthew, Deputy Sheriff Chapman, Constable Casey and Prosecuting Attorney Chilton, keeping up that good teamwork that will maintain Madison county’s reputation for being a bad place for the bootlegger, swept down upon the extreme southeastern section of the county lat Friday and brought a man home with them, also a quantity of a beverage that they think has a kick stronger than a mule.
By a majority larger than even its warmest supporters had even claimed at the election Tuesday, ensuring adequate means for continuity the Fredericktown school system on a plane as high as before.
The matter of oil continues to hold the center of the stage in the minds of the average Fredericktown citizen, and the developments during the past week have been numerous and varied. The wells that have been producing oil for the past several weeks continue as producers, though there has perhaps been a decrease in the flow. It is explained, however, that the flow has fluctuated more or less from week to week since the discovery, and the general belief is that the flow will be as heavy as ever within the next few days.
75 Years – May 11, 1950

Harmony prevails in the management-employee relations as a contract was signed last Wednesday between the Company and the United Gas, Coke and Chemical Workers Union, CIO, Local 604. One of the most important gains for the employees is the pension plan which provides for $80 per month pensions instead of $60 as previously provided.
This is the story of one that got away—a burglar, that is. Last Saturday night about 8 o-clock Paul McFerron, janitor and caretaker at the High School, entered the main building to put some fish in a deep freeze in the school’s kitchen. With him was his 12-year-old son, Paul Ray. Upon going into the school McFerron noticed that the paines of glass in the Superintendents and Principals offices were broken.
Letters were sent this week to employees of the National Lead Company announcing a picnic to be staged on Saturday, May 27 at Memorial Park in Fredericktown between 9:30 and 4:30. The employees and their families are invited to spend the day as guests of the company.
Burl Lowrey, summer-time Park supervisor, told the Democrat-News this week that the play program will open this year on May 28 with the pool opening on that date also. A new idea will be instituted this summer at Memorial Park. A music program, under the direction of Phil Brox, will get underway shortly after school is out and band instruction will be given to those in attendance.
50 Years – May 8, 1975

(photo) The Valedictorian of the 1975 graduating class at Marquand-Zion is Miss Kathy Dees, daughter of Mr. and Mrs Burnies Dees. The Salutatorian is Miss Kathy Cook, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elbert Cook.
The Democrat News has employed Miss Teri Hulsey, Farmington, a recent graduate of the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, Columbia.
Members of the 1975 Black Cat baseball team: Garry Phillips, Neal Whitworth, Stan Souden, Scott Senter, David Slinkard, Mike Ward, Kevin Dunn, Jim Hawkins, Alan Birk, Bob Warren, Jim Bob Miller, Tim Bollinger, Mike Stevens, Steve Delezene, Mike Campbell, Kevin Owens, Eddie Paulk, Mark Harris, Mitch Hill, Alan Long, Danny Slinkard, Coach Terry Ashby, Gary Harris, Clifford Hall and managers Lindell Kemp and Jeff Strange.

(photo) Mike Powell, left, and Paul Whitacre, received top ratings at the recent 26th annual industrial Education Awards Program at Southeast Missouri State University. Instructor Clint McCormack said the scores were higher this year than ever before and that entries were up to more than 100, with 40 from this area competing for top rankings. Entries are judged by staff members at Southeast University.
25 Years – May 17, 2000

(photo) The Leffew Bull Riding School had a class this past weekend at the Fredericktown Lions Club Rodeo Grounds. There were ten local participants and one from Ohio. The class taught bull riding techniques and skills. The Leffews are from California, and are world famous for their classes and are considered the gurus of teaching.
Aline Hollinger has been employed with the City of Fredericktown since 1995. She began as temporary municipal court clerk in April 1996 and was appointed court clerk in 1997. Now, comes word from the Missouri Association of Court Administrators and the University of Missouri, that Hollinger has earned the professional designation “C.C.A.” (Certified Court Administrator).

Risha Sheets, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sheets of Fredericktown, received the Agriculture Ability Award at the 92nd Annual Student Awards Convocation, April 25, at the College of the Ozarks. Sheets is a 1998 FHS graduate.
