This compilation image of the 22 former Flat River Junior College students who died in service during World War II will be included in Rodney Wilson’s presentation. Submitted by Rodney Wilson
Mineral Area College American history and world religions instructor Rodney Wilson presents the second of his two-part lecture on the history of Flat River Junior College and MAC on July 23 at 7 p.m. in the Farmington firehouse’s community room. Wilson will share interesting details of the community college’s rich history of people, places, and events.
Wilson said the presentation will include interesting details about FRJC’s history, including the nearly 500 former students who served during World War II. Attendees will learn about the 22 former FRJC students who died during service. In addition, those attending the history presentation will learn about the 1950s transition from FRJC to MAC.
“Then we will move into the creation of MAC in 1965 and move along as time allows into the period of land purchase and construction of the current campus,” said Wilson.
The local community college’s history dates back more than 100 years, when it first started as FRJC. The former junior college site was located where Central High School’s front parking lot is currently located.
There are many interesting and widely unknown facts about MAC and its rich history. One of these facts is there are two cemeteries located on the college campus. There is no admission fee to attend this community event. Attendees can access the firehouse’s community room through the door located at the front of the building.
