100 YEARS – August 13, 1925
The entire school board, composed of Wm. Gudgher, Roy Robertts, Dr. Higdon, John Mills, Clarence Crow and Joey Butterick, resigned in a body Monday evening of this week, placing their resignations in the hands of County Supt. G.M. Cozean, together with a statement of the reasons that lead to the resignations. The text of the statement and resignation of the old board follows: “We, the undersigned members of the school board, deeply regret that, according to the opinions of our local attorneys and the State Superintendent, it is impossible for us to comply with the the wishes of the people as expressed by the vote at the election held on Aug. 31, for the reason that we cannot assume responsibility of using the bond money to erect two new buildings, to buy school sites and for the reason that we do not desire to throw the school district into litigation and cause infinite delay(…)”
75 YEARS – August 17, 1950
The Saddle and Bridle Club of Madison County is making every effort to attract horses from not only Madison County but adjoining counties and states for the Horse Show which is to take place on the last night of the Fair scheduled for September 22 and 23. Henry Moyers of the Saddle and Bridle Club said this week that many merchants are contributing prize money for the horse show.
With only two weeks remaining in August, school teachers have been busy preparing themselves for the school term and students are awaiting the day with little enthusiasm. On another page of this newspaper enrollment dates are announced for the Fredericktown system and Marquand has announced that classes will begin on August 28 with a new superintendent of school, Marshall Arnold.

50 YEARS – August 14, 1975

(photo) The work load on the City Light and Water Dept. crews has been extremely heavy of late. Crews have been busy with water and sewer line construction to the senior citizen and R-I School site; the expansion at Madison Memorial Hospital and with tree trimming. A construction crew will be employed to run power to the new high school, located just off Highway 72 east.

(photo) Sp/4 Michael Jordan undergoes training at the Missouri National Guard Non-Commissioned Officers Academy at Camp Clark in Nevada. He is a native of Fredericktown, but now lives in Poplar Bluff. He is a member of the 1140th Engineer Battalion, Company D in Fredericktown.

(photo) 1975 Black Cat football cheerleaders recently returned from camp on the campus of Missouri Valley College at Marshall. They won several honors during the week including two blue ribbons and three red ribbons. They also won the spirit stick for showing the most spirit. Interested residents met Tuesday night at the Black River Electric Community room to discuss plans for the teen center. They are expected to discuss rules, regulations and a date for the opening of the teen center. Also on the agenda, was election of a peer advisory committee to be chosen from young people interested in the center.
25 YEARS – August 16, 2000

(photo) When we last spoke with Tom Roed of Oak Grove Studios nearly two years ago, he was in the process of updating his recording studio and producing more winning music for area artists. Picutured is the newest production of Todd Anthony CD.
Two companies have announced their plans to operate a cobalt mine in Fredericktown. U.S. Cobalt, Inc. of Colorado and Atna Resources Ltd., a Vancouver, Canada corporation, agreed last week to a joint venture to operate the mine at the old National Lead/Anschutz site, near Chamber Drive and East Marvin Street.

(photo) Andrea Brewington, seven, shows off some interesting potatoes grown in her family’s garden and picked last week. The “spud characters” are a dog and an “alien baby.”

(photo) 4-Given, Jamie Graham, Lauren Wright, Leslie Sikes and Audra Spain, won 1st place in the St. Francois County Fair Talent Show. The talent show was held August 8, 2000.
