Local artists celebrated with banner reception

Young artists were celebrated as the Farmington Banner Contest winners with a special reception. The event, originally planned to be held in Long Park, moved inside at Long Memorial Hall because of last-minute summer rain.

The 11th annual Art in Bloom Banner Contest had nearly 2,400 submissions. More than 350 student-designed banners were selected to be displayed in 10 towns in the region, including Arcadia Valley, Bismarck, Bonne Terre, Caledonia, Desloge, Farmington, Frankclay, Fredericktown, Park Hills, and Potosi.

There were more than 1,900 submissions from Farmington students. Out of those entries, 150 designs were selected to be displayed on banners throughout town.

The City of Farmington, Casey Moore, and Travis Trokey were instrumental in quickly moving the originally planned outdoor ceremony to inside.

Mineral Area Council on the Arts Executive Director Tiffany Gallaher expressed her appreciation for Trokey and his Farmington Public Library staff for all they do to support the annual banner contest, from assisting in arranging the reception to serving as the entry drop-off location, arranging and hosting the judging, and providing a space for people to pick up banners, certificates, and maps.

Farmington Mayor Chris Morrison attended the reception. Gallaher thanked him for encouraging young students in their artistic efforts and handing out certificates and maps for the winners.

“We also want to thank the parents and teachers who continue to inspire, support, and motivate students to create art and share their talents,” said Gallaher.

She added, “Seeing the creativity of our youth brighten our community streets is truly inspiring! It is truly incredible for me to watch this contest grow year after year.”
